about

This is a recording of 10 voices reading the introduction to "Preliminary Writing On Wrath & Music," a treatise on music centered around an idiosyncratic conception of Wrath, written by Nick James Scavo and edited by Alec Sturgis. The text was written and edited from 2017-2018 and is currently unpublished. Most of the voices are voice actors hired on freelance marketplace website Fiverr, as well as a friend (Kyle Thomas Hinton). The readings of the text are paired alongside a musical accompaniment by Alec Sturgis.

"Preliminary Writing On Wrath & Music" looks to Vilém Flusser’s paradigm described in "The History of The Devil" for conceptual guidance and discusses three accompanying concepts that help animate Wrath’s presence in the production and practice of music: Magic, Law, and Chance. Flusser positioned Wrath within its network of the "seven deadly sins" that “emerge from different layers [...] to form a single torrent unfolding itself below and above humanity in order to drag it toward progress.” Despite the the sins' complexly nested blood sharing, moral codes, and accompanying expressions, Wrath is distinct in that it approaches progress through rupture, by overpowering its circumstances. The treatise explores how music can be a revealing measure for Wrath’s elemental ambition: to correct perception into something comprehensive. In other words, the text discusses how music can demonstrate how we compress the untrustworthiness of experience into louder assertions, amplified as a hallucination of control.
